Pregabalin Vs Gabapentin

Pregabalin is another popular drug marketed by the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. The United States’ Food and Drug Administration approved the drug the same year Neurontin came to the US. Unlike Gabapentin, the Drug Enforcement Agency regulates Pregabalin as a Schedule V drug. (1)

A group of Japanese scientists discovered Gabapentin as early as 40 years ago. Afterwards, Parke-Davis introduced it in the United States back in 2004 under the trade name Neurontin. Ever since, Parke-Davis’s parent company Pfizer considers Neurontin as one of its best selling drugs.

Uses of Pregabalin and Gabapentin

First of all, Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant and an anti-epileptic medication. Hence, it can treat epilepsy as well as nerve pain from shingles by altering the neurotransmitters in the brain. Furthermore, this affects nerves in the body by regulating the electrical impulses that are sent by the brain.

On the other hand, Pregabalin, also known as Lyrica, is closely related to Gabapentin. Like the latter, it is also an anti-epileptic medication. However, Pregabalin has been proven to cure more diseases than Gabapentin. Aside from nerve pain caused by shingles, it can also treat pain that resulted from diabetes, spinal cord injury, and fibromyalgia.

Evidently, being a cure for a wider range of diseases, Pregabalin proves to be the more superior drug between the two. However, before deciding which of the two you should take, there are several variables that you should consider.

What are the Side Effects of Pregabalin and Gabapentin?

As they are closely related, Pregabalin and Gabapentin share some similar uses and side effects. Listed below are some of the common side effects that both drugs share:

• Chest pain and/or trouble breathing
• Mood behavior and depression

Price of Pregabalin Vs. Gabapentin

Due to its lower price, Gabapentin is the more attractive option between the two drugs. Hence, looking only at the per unit value of both drugs, it comes cheaper with the average price at $13.38 for 90 capsules or $0.1497 each. (4)

On the other hand, Pregabalin commands a higher price on the market. Buying a 75mg (60 capsules) bottle will cost you around $431.10. Hence, it costs $7.185 per capsule, which is almost 4,800 percent higher compared to Gabapentin. Noteworthy, more companies are expected to sell generic versions of the drug possibly lowering its prices for the public. (5)

Which Drug Is More Effective?

Studies have shown that Pregabalin to be more effective in treating neuropathic pain than Gabapentin. In fact, a lower dose of Pregabalin can cure the same sickness Gabapentin can with a higher dose due to its high absorption rate. Furthermore, its plasma concentrations increase linearly with the dose.

The same results appeared after comparing the two drugs in treating partial epilepsy. Results have shown that 150mg to 600mg of Pregabalin can be more effective than 900mg to 2400mg of Gabapentin. (6) (7)

Choosing between Pregabalin and Gabapentin should be done under the supervision of trained medical personnel. Additionally, avoid trying new drugs without first consulting a doctor or a physician. Lastly, taking these two drugs together can endanger your health if done improperly, so make sure always to consult your doctor.

Buspar, chemically known as Buspirone, is a psychoactive drug that can treat various mental disorders. It is also an anxiolytic drug which means it can also alleviate the symptoms of anxiety disorders. However, unlike Xanax, Buspar is not from the benzodiazepine group.

Uses Of Buspar And Xanax

Some sedating properties present in Xanax can help alleviate dysfunctions in the brain. Xanax works by binding itself to the GABA receptors present in the brain of the user. The drug will then help regulate the electrical impulses that it receives from the brain.

Buspar, on the other hand, works by interacting with certain hormones in our body like serotonin and dopamine. Buspar and Xanax share many uses and properties. However, some functions are also unique to each drug. (2)

Listed below are some uses unique to each drug:

Buspar Uses

• Depression: Although not yet approved for such use, some studies have shown that Buspar may have some antidepressant properties.
• Sexual Dysfunction: There have been some studies that have shown Buspar’s ability to treat HSDD or Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder in women.
• ADHD: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a mental disorder that makes it hard for the person to focus, and limit mental or physical activities.

Xanax Uses

• Panic Disorders: The FDA initially approved Xanax for the treatment of panic disorders. The World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry recommends it for the treatment of panic disorders only to patients with no history of addiction, or dependence.
• Chemotherapy- induced Nausea: Xanax has been shown to reduce the incidence or severity of nausea on patients that are undergoing chemotherapy.

Side Effects Of Xanax And Buspar

Due to its low abuse potential, the FDA categorized Xanax as a Schedule IV drug. Nevertheless, there is still a slim chance of getting addicted to it whether or not one uses it according to its prescription. Because of this, the Food and Drug Administration decided to place it under the supervision of the Drug Enforcement Agency.

Some common side effects of Xanax are ataxia, cognitive impairment, constipation, drowsiness, fatigue, insomnia, and more. Remember to check with your doctor before taking this drug to assure that these side effects will not endanger your health and safety.

Buspar, on the other hand, carries a lower of physical dependence and addiction compared to other psychoactive drugs. Effect On Pregnant Women

Buspar is under the category B with regards to pregnancy. This means that there have been no adequate studies conducted on the effects of the drug to pregnancy. However, prior animal tests have shown that Buspar has minimal effects to fetuses.

Can Xanax And Buspar Be Taken Together?

If taken correctly, taking Buspar and Xanax together poses minimal dangers. There are instances where doctors prescribe the two drugs at the same time as they can work side by side in treating anxiety. Furthermore, Buspar could act as a preventive measure against anxiety attacks, while Xanax can help treat any attack that Buspar was not able to prevent.

However, it is still best to consult your doctor when taking either of the two drugs. Some drug combinations may be safe for others, but not for some. Hence, it is always smart to be careful when deciding to take any drug.

Mixing drugs with other substances has been practiced by many people for various reasons. However, many combinations can endanger you if done improperly. Also, mixing drugs or substances without the approval of a doctor can worsen the intensity of the individual side effects of each drug.

How Does Adderall Affect The Body?

The United States’ Food and Drug Administration has approved Adderall for two primary uses. These uses are the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (or ADHD) and Narcolepsy. ADHD is a mental disorder that causes a person to have difficulty in controlling their impulses, and/or maintaining focus or attention. (1)

The drug contains two types of amphetamine salts, namely amphetamine, and dextroamphetamine. The manner in which Adderall treats ADHD is not entirely understood. Nevertheless, what scientists believe is that amphetamine helps increase the activity of the norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain.

Norepinephrine, similar to adrenaline, is a powerful stimulant drug. On the other hand, dopamine is the neurotransmitter in charge of the reward and pleasure centers of our brain. Also, these two chemicals are believed to be involved in the occurrence of ADHD in some individuals. (2)

This means that there is a high possibility of abuse and misuse of the drug if taken improperly. Other than addiction, the drug can also cause many other side effects both physically and mentally.

It is a widely-known drug mainly because of reported effectiveness despite having a very affordable price tag.

However, it has been known to be used for other than it official purposes. For one, people suffering from a migraine are taking it to alleviate their pains. A migraine also targets nerves in the head, and taking it for this intention eases the symptoms in the same way it does for neuropathic pains.

Others, on the other hand, are using Gabapentin to treat their insomnia. Because of the feeling of calmness this medication gives, drowsiness is a very common side effect experienced by those who consume it.

These results, according to him and his co-researchers, suggest that gabapentin may be beneficial in treating primary insomnia. However, it should be clear that what was exhibited in the study is not a causal relation, but only a correlation.

How Does Gabapentin Work In Treating Insomnia?

First, it must be noted that drowsiness is only a side effect of Gabapentin. However, if someone with insomnia consumes it, it can normalize brain activities and help the person have a good night of sleep.

It must also be noted that this has the greater possibility of working if the insomnia is not a symptom of menopause where progestin and estrogen therapy is recommended instead of Gabapentin.

The way it works for sleep is the same as it does for its original purposes, neuropathic pain and epileptic seizures.
